Program Overview:

The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and the American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) have joined together to develop a unified program to support your practice and provide the best available science and clinically relevant information on current and future directions in valvular heart disease. This three-day interactive program, with the world’s leading cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, offers an integrative approach to managing the medical, surgical and interventional challenges in valvular heart disease. Drawing upon ACC, AHA and ABTS Guidelines, the expert faculty will provide evidence-based strategies that will impact your practice performance and improve outcomes for your patients with valvular heart disease. Additionally, this program will afford participants the unique opportunity to network and share best practices in a focused and intimate setting.

Educational Objectives:

The overall goal of this program is to enhance participants’ competence by providing the most up-to-date developments in the medical, interventional and surgical management of patients with heart valve disease and to integrate this knowledge into the practice setting.

Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to –

• Design and execute a management plan based on an evaluation of controversial issues that arise in patients with valvular heart disease and the limitations imposed by the lack of randomized controlled trials in this area
• Apply advances in percutaneous interventional therapies for aortic and mitral valve disease
• Implement new treatment strategies to assist in identifying when to refer patients for surgery, particularly valve repair surgery
• Identify surgical indications, and demonstrate techniques and outcomes for valve repair and replacement surgery
• Predict advances in aortic valve evaluation and treatment options
• List management strategies for patients with valvular heart disease
• Apply advances in aortic valve evaluation and treatment options

Target Audience

This program is intended for cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Other medical professionals involved in the evaluation, diagnosis and/or management of patients with valvular heart disease, including cardiac anesthesiologists, echocardiographers, internists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, physician assistants, sonographers, pharmacists and perfusionists will find this program of value.

The American Association for Thoracic Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The AATS designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses:

The American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20 continuing education hours. Requirements for successful completion are attendance in a session in its entirety and completing the evaluation tool. Each attendee should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. While offering credits noted above, the program is not intended to provide extensive training or certification in the field.
