“Sex and Gender: The Impact on Disease and Patient Outcomes in Cardiothoracic Surgery” Chair: Yolonda L. Colson, MD, PhD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Data will be presented that highlights important clinical differences in the presentation, outcomes and risk factors between men and women for several common cardiothoracic diseases and conditions. Presenters will discuss potential gender-based practice changes that can improve care for patients of both sexes.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify sex and gender-based differences in presentation, treatment, and outcomes that are currently present in patients with coronary artery disease, aortic aneurysms, end-stage heart or lung disease and esophageal cancer.
- Describe potential biological differences and treatment options which are more likely in women with lung cancer.
- Detail the impact of pregnancy on the treatment of valvular heart disease.
- Apply new knowledge to alter current clinical practice to improve patient outcomes for both male and female patients with cardiothoracic diseases.
