JCTSE Educator Symposium

Held in Conjunction with the AATS 91st Annual Meeting

All interested CT surgeons dedicated to thoracic surgical education are welcome to attend these sessions!

Thoracic Surgery Educators “Breakfast Club”
Tuesday, May 10, 2011, 7:00am - 8:30am

Recent “hot topic” journal articles focusing on surgical education will be reviewed. In addition, current projects, problems and solutions will be discussed. A presentation will be given on simulation education currently being conducted.

The Best of Educate the Educators
Wednesday, May 11, 2011, 7:00am – 9:00am

Participants will gain insight on how to improve teaching skills in the operating room, how to more effectively give and receive feedback and how to convert educational efforts into career advancement. In addition, a framework to develop a skills lab will be provided. Finally, an update on JCTSE initiatives will be presented.

Teaching Residents to Teach
Wednesday, May 11, 2011, 1:00pm – 5:00pm

CT surgery residents will receive invaluable instruction on topics including but not limited to: characteristics of the most effective educators; setting goals and expectations for junior residents and medical students; adult learning theory; questioning as a teaching tool; barriers and solutions to teaching on the wards; the one minute teacher: tips for teaching with limited time; and giving, receiving and practicing feedback.
